Are you considering hiring a dating coach or matchmaker and are you wondering what the difference is between them?
If so, you're in the right place because in this post I will share with you what the main differences are between them, how they can both do broadly similar things and how you might prefer to choose one service over the other. So, should you hire a dating coach or matchmaker?
Let's start by looking at what a dating coach does:
Here is Wikipedia's definition:
“Dating coaches offer coaching and related products and services to improve their clients' success in dating and relationships. Through discussion, role-playing, behaviour modelling, and other forms of direction, a dating coach trains clients to meet and attract romantic partners.”
The biggest difference between the two is that a dating coach will work with a client to enable them to be their own matchmaker, finding their own dates and potential partners. Dating coaches will use a broad range of techniques and skills that will help the client let go of limiting beliefs and behaviours that might have been preventing them from finding love. They will help the client make the most of their best attributes so that they can confidently look for and attract their ideal partner. Some dating coaches even help with more general life coaching so that the client can make even greater changes and improvements in their life. Now let's look at what a matchmaker does:
Here is Wikipedia's definition:
“Matchmaking is the process of matching two or more people together, usually for the purpose of marriage, but the word is also used in the context of sporting events, such as boxing, in business, and in pairing organ donors.”
In contrast a matchmaker will perform the search and selection process on behalf of clients, and in some cases they will even arrange the actual dates. The level of service depends very much on the individual matchmaker but most will provide a very comprehensive service so that all the client has to do is arrive for their date and have a great evening. Matchmakers will hold initial meetings with potential clients to get to know them well enough to perform a comprehensive search of potential matches. This meeting is often very informal, held in public places where the matchmaker can also see how the potential client conducts themselves in public. Much valuable information can be gained by the matchmaker from watching how people eat, how they react to waiting staff, what they drink, how they are dressed etc. Any nearer to knowing if you want to hire a dating coach or matchmaker yet? If not, don't worry we are about to look at the similarities.
How are dating coaches and matchmakers broadly similar?
A great dating coach will also help their client when it comes to finding ideal matches. For example, I spend a large amount of time with my clients as they review online dating profiles. In this way my services are broadly similar to matchmaking. However, at present I do not offer a dating service whereby I will make the dating arrangements for my clients. Similarly, matchmakers will offer their clients advice about how to dress, what to say, how to appear more self-confident etc; ways in which dating coaches also help their clients. Some matchmakers are also coaches, and will require their clients go through an element of coaching as a requirement of becoming a client. So you see, there is some cross over between the two services.
How to choose whether to work with a dating coach or matchmaker (or both):
First of all you should consider whether or not you prefer to be involved in finding your ideal match. Ask yourself if you would prefer to let someone else do the search and selection process; which can be very time consuming. Secondly, would you be happy to do some deep work and reflection on past relationships and behaviours in order to uncover how and why you might be sabotaging your chances of finding real love and lasting happiness. If you have struggled to maintain great relationships in the past you might prefer to work with a coach so that you can deal with any unresolved issues prior to commencing dating again. This will inevitably improve your chances of establishing a successful relationship beyond the first date.
To enhance your search for real love and lasting happiness you can choose to work with either a dating coach or matchmaker. You might even consider hiring both. Some coaches also offer a bespoke matchmaking service as well as coaching. If this is something you are interested in please don't hesitate to contact me to find out more about my elite service.
